The drama Joy tells the true story of the decade-long, uphill battle to pioneer in vitro fertilization (IVF). Set in 1960s and 1970s Britain, the film centers on an unheralded trio: nurse and embryologist Jean Purdy, scientist Robert Edwards, and surgeon Patrick Steptoe. The team joins forces to solve the puzzle of infertility, working to fertilize a human egg outside the body and implant it safely. They face fierce moral, religious, and legal opposition from the church, government, and medical establishment, who accuse them of "playing God".
After years of setbacks—including a period where the lab temporarily shuts down—the trio regroups and presses forward. Their grueling persistence culminates in 1978 with the birth of Louise Joy Brown, the world's first "test tube baby", marking a monumental revolution in modern reproductive medicine.
