The Penguin Lessons, based on a book by, is the true story of Tom Michell, an English teacher in 1970s Argentina who rescues a penguin from an oil spill and finds his life changed by their unlikely friendship.

While on a trip to Uruguay in 1975, Michell finds a Magellanic penguin covered in oil on the beach. He cleans the bird and tries to release it, but the penguin refuses to leave his side. Michell then smuggles the bird, which he names Juan Salvador, back to the elite boys' boarding school in Buenos Aires where he teaches.

Juan Salvador becomes an eccentric and beloved addition to the school, charming both students and staff. He serves as a mascot for the rugby team and helps Michell connect with his students, particularly a shy boy. The penguin also forges a bond with the school's kind-hearted housekeeper, Maria.

The story is set against the political and economic turmoil of Argentina in the 1970s, which provides a stark contrast to the small, heartwarming events taking place within the school. Juan Salvador's presence brings hope and connection in a time of national unrest.
